The Rock!

Hello everybody! I hope you all had a nice Christmas and I certainly hope you ate WAY too much that it was impossible for you to move for at least 20 minutes.
Today I thought I would talk about a fairly old film (1996) that has become one of my favourites and not just mine but my families as well and that film is The Rock, starring Sean Connery and Nicholas Cage with the awesome Ed Harris as well.

The film is based on a group of soldiers led by Frank Hummel (Ed) they seize a deadly gas which is called VX gas I think and it literally burns and melts you, after stealing some rockets as well they then take over Alcatraz.
Hummel threatens the government and the citizens San Francisco and requests $100 million that he will give out to families who's deceased sons were not compensated, Hummel actually uses one of my favourite quotes at this point (the first is simply 4 words)
"These men died for their country, and they weren't even given a god damn military burial, the situation is unacceptable"

The FBI employ Stanley Goodspeed who is a chemical weapon specialist; probably the best. After realising the severity of this mission he is forced to turn to John Mason who is a British MI-6 agent imprisoned for 30 years for allegedly stealing files of J.Edgar, Mason is the only person to escape the prison and now he has to break in with the help of a biochemist with no combat training. After a successful entrance the team are swiftly executed by Hummel's men leaving only Mason and Stanley to finish the job.

That's the the gist of it really, me and my dad love this film just because its awesome and we are both big fans of Sean Connery, we discussed that he's basically playing James Bond again, if only he had been captured. He worked for MI-6, he's British and it's Sean Connery it's like he's portraying an older James Bond obviously its not James but they both share the same traits and we found it interesting, did I mention it was Sean Connery?
Despite Michael Bay's criticism I honestly believe this is one of his best films, he creates a fun yet serious film supported by legendary actors and it had everything in it, Car chases, explosions, Connery, Guns and Elton John. There are some fantastic scenes in this film like the car chase but my personal favourite is their time in Alcatraz, there are a lot of cool enjoyable gun fights and funny moments like Mason talking about Gang rape... he think's he's lost his sexual appeal and of course the "Rocket Man" scene
The film consists of close up gun action and realistic fist fights that result in both of our heroes getting hurt this for me created a more realistic scenario and put me on the edge of my seat, I believe what helps as well is Michael Bays choice of shots, he gets in close and will blow up anything he wants to create a lot more excitement in my opinion I felt that the story was a bit far fetched possibly over the top however its simple to follow but it worked somehow and the use of humour and action creates a counter weight. The most impressive thing about this film which Michael Bay films lack is a consistent decent script  but this film manages to execute funny short liners that could have only been done by the wonderful Sean, he's a very natural and real actor and his script creates this believable character, he doesn't say anything that destroys the witty character and no matter what happened he always remained himself, he didn't have an epiphany throughout the entire film he was the funny, crude and favoured character because of his short lines like "Welcome to the Rock" and "Personally, I think your a fucking idiot"

The rock is probably my favourite film of the late 90's honestly I don't really know why, all I know is thats its a fun film to watch, I didn't sit there and analytically watch it I just enjoyed it. It has cool action scenes and funny moments with intense scenes it's literally a mixture of multiple genres, action, comedy and thriller.

The cast is amazing end of, Nicholas Cage is brilliant as the inexperienced soldier who is thrown into a new situation which he takes head on but he wouldn't have last 3 minutes without Mason mainly because he didn't know how to use a gun and that created quite a fun vibe, Mason had to ensure Goodspeed's safety but obviously he gets himself into all kinds of trouble. Ed Harris's character slowly develops throughout the film and he's interesting because some of us may agree with his aims and feel sorry for his due to the loss of his wife and I presume friends who fought aside him. And finally John Mason... I don't need to say anything else other than... Welcome to the rock.
oooh did I mention Hans Zimmer did the music?... well he does and its awesome

well thats it for today, I give this film a solid 8/10 and I'm sure if your a Connery fan like my dad then you will love it. I've got some pretty cool stuff planned like a discussion on Jedi's and Sith's which should be really fun and a chat about the Mandarin from Iron Man 3. I just want to say thank you for reading everything it does mean a lot and 2014 looks like a great year for movies with Amazing spider man 2, Dawn of the planet of the apes, Guardians of the Galaxy and Captain America... I'll be pretty preoccupied with an empty wallet but the end of it.
Hope you enjoyed
Until Next time!
