I saw Pacific Rim last weekend sorry the review took a while to be posted; I've been a bit lazy this week :)
Now I've watched a lot of monster films and this MAY be the best one (i am still deciding) what makes this one better from films like Godzilla and King Kong? well in this the monsters are fucking HUGE!! Godzilla is 100m tall where as one of the Kaiju known as Slattern who is seen at the end of the film is 182 meters tall. Back to the film!
Pacific rim is based on this underwater crack between 2 tectonic plates that has created a hole between our world and another dimension... the made up science of it isn't really explained which is a shame because I bet they could have made something really cool up like... ermm... damn this is hard ah well, moving on!
these huge giant monsters come out of the hole and start attacking everyone, our smart race of homosapiens collect all our resources and build giant robots which require 2 pilots, no idea why personally 1 would have been better, but these pilots go through a process in which their memories and emotions are locked together. as the story goes on more and more monsters appear causing chaos, they categorise these monsters in threat level and the highest they've had is 4 so you know for sure the final one will be a bad ass (its only a 5)
they film focuses on 2 characters called Raleigh and Mako who become pilots, along with there robots and the last surviving ones they must fight against the endless waves of monsters and devise a plan to close the hole.
I am a big fan of monster films especially when there are loads of unique monsters, having loads really gave the creators the freedom to create some really cool ones, like the one in the photo above or my personal favourite the winged monster which is super super cool. what i like about this film beside the awesome monsters and the CGI is the connection between the characters and the way they are portrayed, all of them have suffered one way or another and in all honesty its not a film where the characters are having a laugh ect most of them are moping around carrying the weight of this event on there shoulders, at the start of the film it explains that they were winning but that went downhill due to the rapid increase of monsters and the tragic loss of the Jaegers (the machines) however one thing I didn't like was the final boss, I wont say much but I thought it would have been awesome to jump from a category 4 monster to a 6, that would have been cool but I guess they may leave that for the sequel.
overall the film is very good, a great monster film that displays awesome fighting scenes and spectacular CGI, Pacific Rim is supported by a really good case especially Idris Elba however I would have replaced Mako because I really struggled understanding her and she would occasionally speak in English then mid sentence just change and in the nicest way possible... she was annoying not only did she almost kill everyone but she's just very annoying, i feel sorry for Idris who had to put up with her.
overall i would give this a secure 7/10
the special effects were brilliant and the story was very good with a few unanswered questions which didn't, bother me as much, but it was very loud and sometimes the action was to close so it was quite difficult to decipher what was going on. But the main highlight of the film was the designs of the Kaiju; some of them look pretty awesome. so if you haven't seen it, GO NOW!
until next time
