Yesterday was my Mums birthday and we both have a tiny obsession with Les Miserables so I thought I would review this for her.
Happy Birthday ma!
For those who haven't seen it or heard it I suggest you get and find it online or give the songs a listen, 3 people mocked me for listening to Les Mis and now all 3 of them do the same (Luke was one of them :p )
The film is based on the French revolution and events that just meet, its both bad luck and good luck in a way. Jean Val Jean is a hunted criminal who seeks redemption and sets a goal to create a better life whilst running from Javert the police inspector who won't give up. He saves a woman's child who grows up to like a daughter, their happiness is then ended when Javert returns and Cosette's lover joins the revolution, I'll be honest its not the happiest film I've watched it just seems to get worse for the characters and I felt sorry for Val Jean cause no one messes with Wolverine!
The first thing I would like to point out is how amazing the cast is, Russell Crowe, Hugh Jackman and Helena; it is truly brilliant. I was very shocked by Wolverines and Maximus's performance I honestly didn't know they could sing but they did a great job.
Me and Luke thought Russell Crowe was fantastic despite critics response to a singing Crowe (did I make a pun?) but that may be because me and him really like Javert, his songs are so catchy! and to be honest I almost felt sorry for Javert because the thing is... he is not a bad guy, just following orders and cleaning the streets but he gets a tad obsessed which is his downfall really, I'm not supporting his cause but Val Jean only stole a loaf of bread and now he is a better man.
Obviously this film isn't for everyone but I really do suggest it, I didn't fancy it but it was the cast that drew me in and I ended up loving it, I always said I didn't like musicals but it turns out I was wrong I like quite a few. The songs really make the film because they make up about 95% of the dialogue, they sing everything!
I believe this musical is unique because I enjoy all of the songs, if you take the phantom of the opera for instance I only like 3 songs but in Les Mis every song is great, However I think they are done better on stage because in the film the actors use a lot of emotion for example Fantine cries when she sings I dreamed a dream which is brilliant for the screen but if you see it in the theatre the singing is a lot clearer due to the woman not crying but I guess that's something I prefer, I do prefer the stage show more than the film.
But the film is still great, I think what makes it good is that it is really brought to life and the singing is genuine, I love the fact that they sung it live and that's another reason why it is so unique.
I would give this 8/10 I think the only problem I had was Sacha, I don't really like Sacha and I think they should have picked someone else to be with Helena however they were very fun but there was just something about him. I think that was all the problems I had, it is my favourite musical and when I watch it I focus more on the singing and just enjoy it the best I can.
For those unaware, Portsmouth got a tiny bit of screen time in it, right at the beginning with the convicts which I thought was great I mean who goes "hmm lets film in.... Portsmouth" no offence but it just doesn't happen a lot but it was nice to see our historic dockyard being used :)
During Les Mis you never have 1 favourite song, oh no that's just not possible, so here are mine.

My favourite songs are:
Stars, do you hear the people sing, The Confrontation, Look down, Fantine' Arrest, One day more, Empty Chairs and Bring him home.
I've been told by a few that they cried when Eponine sings and dies but I honestly didn't feel sorry for her (oops?) but I guess its an OK song but... Carrie Hope Fletcher is better!
well I think that's all I have to say about that, please give the songs a try, especially "one day more" you'll get a taste of all the main characters. And don't forget to check out my facebook page if you are interested in any movie news like trailers and just general things like release dates and things that have caught my eye.
I hope you enjoyed reading
until next time
