Superman Returns

Well, today i reached 2000 views and because i love you I will be doing 2 reviews as i have just come out of the cinema after watching Frankenstein; I've never reviewed a play so this should be fun.

Now, a lot of people hated Superman Returns but i rather enjoyed it, not as good as Man of Steel however there were better elements.

so this film directed by Bryan Singer looks at the origin of the man of steel in little detail but focuses on him as though he has been doing it for years, i guess you could say it kinda acts as a remake to the Christopher reeve films as it still contains the classical theme which Man of steel avoided. In this film Superman has disappeared to visit the remains of Krypton and when he returns Lois is engaged to Cyclops (haha!) and good old Lex has escaped once again with an evil plan, he uses the crystals from Superman's planet to build his own continent, Superman must struggle to face his arch-nemesis and his weakness before thousands are killed.

In this film compared to the older ones the CGI is a lot better and the scheme is a lot better, making a continent out of Kryptonite is pretty cool and is basically Superman's worst nightmare. The brilliant thing that this film introduced was Superman doing what he does, saving people which Man of steel avoided because it was his first day on the job, cut the guy some slack. One of the good scenes in the film was the plane scene, a plane goes out of control and superman saves the day its only about 10 minutes long but its a scene that could never be created in the Christopher reeve films, i really like the part where superman crashes into the wing and it is torn apart easily. From there Clark tries to rebuild his connection with Lois still being the clumsy man he is which is an aspect i'm really happy they kept, I absolutely love Christopher reeves performance as the clumsy idiot especially when he faints after being shot at (he catches the bullet) and Brandon Routh although being my least favourite Superman he actually did a really good job.
Brandon has that really good look that Christopher had, I don't really know how to describe it but when they both talk there's that superior tone similar to sarcasm and that little smirk but also when they play Clark they both portray the idiot brilliantly.
So in a way this film acted as a sequel if you really wanted to go that far because they kept all the elements the same and I think that may have been why it went so wrong especially with the critics and some of the audience.
The final Superman film featuring Christopher was in 1987, Superman Returns was released in 2006 so thats 19 years, i think people were expecting a newly designed superman not one that was so similar to the Superman my dad grew up with.

Siding away from the negative feedback the film received I actually really enjoyed it, i really enjoyed Kevin Spacey who played the infamous Lex Luthor, he was enthusiastic and very evil and in my opinion he was right for the job maybe not as good as Gene Hackman but he really brought something special to the film. One thing I hated was Kate Bosworth who plays Lois lane I dunno what it was but she just looks annoying and nothing like the Lois from the originals who was actually quite funny.
The interesting a fun thing about this film is that it introduces Superman's son who is asthmatic for some reason and its developed nicely throughout the film and is revealed when the kid kills a guy with a piano... not at all haunted by the experience.

In a little summary it is a good superhero film, it has the element of superman saving people and using all of his powers including ice breath however due to the fact that this film acted as a sequel that was its major flop, i mean 19 years is a hell of a long wait but saying that it was nice to see similarities between Chris's and Brandon's portrayal. I'm going to try and put this in the nicest way... this film was unneeded because it didn't offer anything new whereas Batman begins which came out a year before introduced a whole new Batman and Nolans interpretation has acted as guidelines for other superhero films but Mr Singer avoided those lines and hindered Superman's evolution, this is where Zack Snyder jumps in an changes everything (7 years later)
out of 10 i would give it a 6 or 7
it has its good point and bad points its just the fact it was so unneeded, it literally had no purpose but it was an enjoyable film to watch, it did a few things that Man of steel didn't which was great but it lacked action this wasn't a big loss because Superman struggles a lot during this film and its intense so at points action wasn't needed.

So thats all for tonight, yes its a bit late but oh well.
Just want to say a big thank you for those who are continuing to read my reviews, i have a lot of fun doing this and i was aiming to reach 2000 views by Christmas; my aim is now 3,000 fingers crossed.
thanks for reading
Until next time
