Hunger Games: Catching Fire
hello :) well last night I saw Hunger games with my friends and I'll be honest I was nervous because I really didn't enjoy the 1st film I dunno why I just couldn't get into it or like it but this one... this one was very different. The main thing I struggled on through both films was who was who, I knew a few mains characters and the dress designer other than that I was like who's that? so I did have to ask Luke who some of the characters were and I'm thinking that could have impacted my opinion on the film. I love the idea of the film I think its very clever and quite fun and I think the first film lacked the idea of young people killing each other but that's just my opinion, I haven't read the books but I've heard good things about them and I think it would have definitely helped if I read them even though I would know what was going to happen.
Anyway onto Catching Fire!
The film takes place a year after the first one and Katniss and Peeta are forced onto the Victor's tour where they must travel to all 12 districts to read out sloppy speeches and convince the people that their love is real, President Snow in fear of a revolution orders Katniss to get rid of the uprising but unfortunately she fails to do that so the president issues the Quarter Quell where all previous victors will be entered into a new arena, the perfect solution to kill Katniss and end the uprising.
Peeta and Katniss must survive this Hunger Games along with the help from some unlikely allies whilst a bigger plan is brewing, a plan that could change everything.
Once I got rid of the first 45 minutes of the film I would say that it was brilliant because for me the first hour seemed to have dragged on a bit because it consisted of a journey to all the districts and a party, it just got a bit boring but obviously it was needed because the audience needed to see the outcome of the hunger games and what I really liked was the effect it had on Katniss, if you think about it... its a traumatising experience so I'm glad that they focused a bit on that and the outcome of it. I did quite enjoy seeing some of the districts and I find the whole concept really weird that technology is very evolved but people aren't, there's still poverty around and discrimination against classes of people so its like our resources have improved but our ideas on people haven't, and some of the clothes they wear are really weird like Lady Gaga has walked in.
from then the film focused on the other victors and their training and that was quite fun because a few of the Victors used... different techniques, one couple used hiding whilst another simple electrocuted 6 contestants at the same time, he was awesome. then you get the really messed up ones like the woman with really sharp teeth. When we got introduced to a new character called Finnick I initially thought he was the bad guy but I was very wrong throughout the whole game he was a reliable asset who was very caring towards this old woman who volunteered so that Finnicks wife wouldn't have to enter, I thought it was his mum to be honest the age difference made sense. One thing I realised about the Hunger Games is that all the characters you like will probably die, I won't give away who but a few of the characters I liked just died and it was like the film was tormenting me but I guess its one of those films that won't end happily.
The actual games was amazing, the fighting was cool and the concept was very good, every hour revealed a new threat which I thought was clever and just showed how committed Snow was to kill Katniss but out of all the threats the monkeys were the best, visually they looked great and the fight between them was pretty awesome and brutal but unfortunately it didn't last long I would have loved to have seen them again, maybe kill some of the other contenders. I was pretty surprised about the scale of the new map which was massive and visually beautiful, they did a great job building a realistic world and their talents really shined when it came to the manipulation of water, water is a very difficult thing to animate because of its multiple particles and they did an amazing job and that applies for the firery clothes that are used quite a lot during the film, in the first film I don't think it looked that real but now it looked amazing, there's one shot where you are behind Katniss as her clothes are on fire and the ashes fly into the screen and it looked brilliant, so yeah visually the film was stunning and I preferred this arena to the previous one because there were loads of twists and turns which made things a bit different and the fact that they were competing against people who have won before and are highly trained maybe more so than Katniss and Peeta, made it more interesting.
what annoyed me about this film? well honestly... Peeta did, he's as bad as Frodo who keeps getting himself into bad situations and almost dying but... he is quite funny in it and I think Josh portrays him brilliantly, he just seems like a weak character and I'm not sure if that's how he comes across in the books but in my opinion he's the only character with a bit of enthusiasm and fun in him (Haymitch is also awesome!)
A bit of a discussion on Jennifer Lawrence, she is brilliant in the Hunger Games but not a likeable person in all fairness, she reminds me of Bella Swan, the fact she can't pick between 2 boys however she is kinda forced to like Peeta so maybe I'm being a tad harsh but the one thing that annoys me about Jennifer is that she is a very funny person and I want her to be in a film where she can be funny naturally, being funny in hunger games wouldn't really work for Katniss because she's a damaged person but I need her to be in a comedy right now!
Ermmm what else is there? well like I said before I don't know a lot of the characters names or what's really going on, a lot of the film I was surprised what was going on but apparently everyone saw it coming so I was a bit slow, maybe not the best film to talk about because of my lack of knowledge in the whole series but I did really enjoy it this time, maybe I could have enjoyed it more if I paid attention more... sorry Luke, Heather and Grant :p I was having a good time and completely forgot about the people around me haha I think I got the gist of it all but I had no clue about some of the characters and the fact I knew nothing kinda made the film a bit more entertaining because I didn't expect a lot of it.
I guess today is more of an open discussion instead of a review but I give it a 7/10 I really enjoyed it.
the action was great, the CGI was fantastic and the story was a lot better along with interesting introductions to new characters however I found some of it a bit boring and I think it was because I was waiting for the actual games to start so it made things go a bit slower. I love the cast especially the new character Finnick played by Sam Claflin he was very cool and violent but apparently he was quite different in the books so the book version may be even better. I think it's very difficult to compare and contrast characters when you haven't read the books I may given them ago but I know what happens in both of the films so I think it would be a bit boring, try reading Harry Potter after you've watched all of them I bet it would be difficult unless your a die-hard fan then I salute you because I would never be able to do that and I think it takes pure dedication to do both but I think its a great opportunity to pick out things that they missed or left out.
honestly I am quite gutted I have to wait a whole 2 years to watch the last film because its in 2 parts but I think doing it this way allows them to make some awesome scenes especially if its focusing on the uprising in all of the districts, I predict awesome battles and a lot of bodies.
Anyway that's it for today, 23 days till Christmas!!!!!!!!!!
Until Next time
PS
sorry for being loud in the cinema, I'm never usually like that, I'm usually the one telling people to shut up so I'm a bit of a hypocrite, oops.
Thanks for reading :)
I have 2 posts in mind, an incredible Hulk review and one that I think will be difficult to write but I want to talk about how strong superman really is, it could be interesting.
