Gravity
Hello again you gorgeous people, I'm on a role this week and I've seen some great films and today I finally saw the award winning Gravity so hold on (see what I did there?)
This film is set in space, its on for 1 hour 30 minutes and if you do want to see it make sure you go to the toiler, you don't wanna miss anything because there is no pausing and something is always happening which surprised me a lot, honestly the whole film surprised me for a few reasons
1) its not a long film, I was expecting 2 1/2 hours maybe and I'm glad it was this short.
2) its always in space, I thought they would cut to the mission control on earth or something.
3) as I said, something is always happening
The film introduces Sandra Bullock who plays a medical engineer called Ryan (her dad wanted a boy) who is joined by George Clooney portraying Matt who is on his last mission, they are immediately warned about a Russian missile strike that has caused a chain reaction (SCIENCE!) and now space debris is hurdling towards them. This film is all about survival and finding a way home after multiple satellites are destroyed and communications are lost. Matt and Ryan are left alone drifting in the black void.
it couldn't be simpler!
Again the length of the film was the biggest shock but that meant there was no messing around just straight to the point, all the destruction starts within 15 minutes, it starts quick and the pace never stops giving us a suspenseful ride filled with stomach turning shots along with loads of loud breaths from Sandra Bullock. I talked to my dad about it and honestly we didn't want to move, we were on the edge of our seats and thats because the directors got straight to the point which made the film less boring and a lot more exciting in my opinion.
The most powerful thing used in this film which made it appear more real was the lack of sound because obviously in space no one can hear you scream and no one can hear debris smashing into a satellite, in your typical action film you'd probably hear immense explosions, the smashing of metal but in this it was nothing, just breathing and the odd bit of music and that created a very powerful vibe which was amazing, I don't know how to describe it, it was such a great take on space which was real and visually beautiful.
The CGI was breathtaking as well especially in the destructive scene which involved small detailed pieces of satellite remains floating aimlessly, another great use of CGI was when Sandra entered a space station, there were a lot of objects floating around ranging from tap water which was designed brilliantly to even a table tennis bat, questions is... where was the table? hmmm
I'm not sure how they created the floating aspect in the film which appeared very real, as well as that I'm not sure whether there were any scientific flaws because unfortunately I'm not a scientist but everything seemed ok in my perspective. There were so many beautiful things in this film and my favourite was the zero gravity it was created brilliantly along with small details which were manipulated very nicely like a parachute, I've never seen a parachute in space but I'm pretty sure thats the closest I'll get to seeing one and I'm happy with it! it was detailed and the visual designers done a very good job creating space in a way I've never seen it, the only thing that put me off was the spinning it made me feel a bit sick but I got use to it, she just wouldn't stop spinning I'm talking a whole 5 minutes of spinning.
The cast is very small... so its easy to follow and they are both amazing but I have to give a round of applause to Sandra who was very good, she really made the situation feel scary and you learn a lot about her as you go on and she has a very sad history, a past she cannot move on from but the presence of Clooney's character helps her and I think you will be a bit shocked during the film, I found it un-expecting.
A little bit on the soundtrack which was breathtaking, there are some amazing tracks in this film that convey sadness and a thrilling adventure what makes it better is that its a dominating sound because of the lack of background noise so you can definitely hear it and it will definitely make the experience more thrilling and depending on if your a soppy person like me, it make even bring a tear or two. The power and influence scores have on me is incredible, some have made me cry whilst some have changed my mood instantly and this is definitely a keeper! I do recommend listening to it if your into that type of music, its composed by Steven Price who I believe will become very well known after this masterpiece.
I touched up a bit on the accuracy of the film... honestly I have no idea if its all scientifically correct I presume that there are errors but I really didn't care it was a great film, I did find one inaccuracy that I won't discuss because it would spoil the film but like every film there are flaws and this one most probably made scientific errors that I couldn't point out because I don't know much about space but I'll say it again... I didn't care at all, I didn't find a flaw and then stand up and walk out because they defied human injury in all fairness the amount of objects they hit should have damaged their suits; thats all im saying. I love space and this film just showed how much I don't know, which isn't a lot because I never got to cover a lot in school, we learnt about stars for 10 minutes... wasn't even in the exam -_-
I give this a 7, The cast was amazing, The visual effects were incredible and there were some great scenes that allowed the designers to show off what they can do and for us to engage in the characters, learn a bit more about them. I just felt the characters development could have been a lot better, we learn quite a bit about Ryan but not a lot about Clooney's character so it would have been nice for an improved introduction. The highlights range from the suspense created throughout the entire film and the jaw dropping visual effects partnered with beautiful music however I don't think this film deserved the hype it got, don't get me wrong it was a great film but I don't know why it won so many awards but don't let me put you off, if you are interested in seeing it then go and please don't let scientific flaws put you off too much.
thank you for reading :)
Until next time
I added a track from gravity to the blog playlist so you can have a listen :) your welcome.
