I know, I know... I should have blogged sooner but I was very very
busy with college and uurmm sleeping so yeah it’s been a busy week for me.
Today Is all about Iron man 3 or more
specifically the Mandarin which caused a lot of up roar and love for the
reinvention of the character, so as a comic book fan I will be talking about
both sides, I am very familiar with the Mandarin so I can definitely understand
peoples annoyance when the great villain turned out to be a British actor named
Trevor; a brilliant name!
In all fairness Iron Man 3 unfortunately
wasn't amazing despite the amazing trailer, I think the root cause was the lack
of time he was Iron man and the fact he got rid of a trait that made him who he
is so that kinda sucked however the Iron Man films do what a lot of other
Marvel films can't do and thats be funny, over the years Marvel films have used
humour and with all respects most of it works but sometimes it doesn't possibly
because they try to hard but when you have Robert Downey Jr delivering the
lines its brilliant all the time so in a way it’s good to see Robert as Tony
stark but as the final Iron Man film I expected a lot more from him in the
suit, saying that we did get a good taste of his workshop and some of them were
amazing but... they kept getting destroyed before we could get a good look, it
seems when I come up with a good point I can always find something to attack it
and unfortunately that was the type of film Iron Man 3 was, it had good bits
and then bad bits but honestly I did enjoy it but not one of my favourites.
A little summary if you haven't seen it,
Tony is haunted by the events of Avengers and is paranoid that an imminent
attack is waiting, so he goes to his workshop to do what he does best and build
an army of suits (AWESOME!) Tony's past soon catches up with him when a former
girlfriend and Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce) master(ish) the extremis formula
enhancing human abilities making them superior. Tony is stripped (hehe) of his
suits and forced to improvise before confronting the Mandarin.
There ya go! Now onto the Mandarin himself
played brilliantly by Ben Kingsley.
Now, in the perspective of a comic book reader
who has read about the mandarin I know that he is a well-trained martial artist
who in fact had trouble paying bills and taxes but he found some magical rings
and became a sorcerer who has fought against the hulk and can beat Iron man so
when we are presented with a seemingly evil villain it was a great start to the
film, he had the voice, the domination against his foes and the background but
the reality is a British drunk named Trevor so you can maybe understand some
peoples outrage, honestly he was a great villain and he was built up to be the
MAIN villain which they shouldn't have done, they built us up ready for this
awesome villain and I felt we didn't receive it.
However
It was hilarious, the whole idea was very
in-genius despite it going against the comics and thats what a lot of the
marvel films have been doing recently to introduce something new and I've got
to admire their guts, it’s a big risk taking a villain and doing what they did
but I think it got a 50-50 reception, I for one loved it even though I knew
that the Mandarin was not like that but it was very funny. Not only did Ben
Kingsley play a very convincing villain but he played a very humorous bum with
the greatest name... Trevor, did I mention he's an actor? they did very well to
deceive us with the trailers which only showed the main villain,Killian,
briefly and I'm sure they could have figured a way around it to make it better,
maybe showing Killian as the main villain but would that spoil the film? Would
that get rid of the mysterious vibe created by the Mandarins presence in the
trailer. What's brilliant is that he was a complete lunatic, he fell asleep, he
stunk up the bathroom and he done a football chant whilst having a gun pointed
at him, I honestly believe that it wasn't necessary but I'm glad they used it
and also the thing that I picked up on is that magic does not exist, they could
have easily solved it with alien technology however the Avengers used aliens
and the over usage of an un-earthly race would get tedious eventually
especially when a lot of Iron Man's foes are originated on earth so maybe they
could have thought their way around but it was a brilliant twist, no matter how
much we moan none of us were expecting it so yes it was a fantastic edition to
the film.
Was it annoying? Yes a little bit
Did I like it? I loved it, it was funny!
Could they have done something else? of
course I'm sure they could have found a way to ditch the comedy and replace it
with some very cool intense action that made magical rings make sense, as long
as they didn't enter the realm of aliens, even though the comics introduce the
rings as alien technology I think it would have been a overdose of alien
appearances. I believe the same for Ultron, considering Ant man designed Ultron
I hope they don't just make in from another planet (I still believe Tony will
be responsible)
anyway, I give Iron Man 3 a 7 because it
had some great elements in there but it also had the potential to be an awesome
conclusion, what made up for the annoying aspects was of course the army of
Iron man suits and the sky diving, out of the trilogy this one focused a lot
more on comedy whereas the 2nd introduced a brilliant partnership of Warmachine
and Iron Man as they fought against drones, we missed that partnership and we
missed some good quality fighting from the character who's name is in the
title.
I was disappointed in parts but again the
film had some great moments, some funny moments and great action but it’s not
what I wanted, the last battle was great but Tony spent a lot of it running
away instead of fighting; Jarvis did a lot of the work.
Before I go, I had a look at some of the suits and picked my favourite, it was either shotgun or the skeleton suit, what's your favourite? And did you like the Mandarin?
