Hello :) today's been a really good day and my parents made it better by asking me if I wanted to watch Transformers 3, I obviously said yes. They know how much I love the film and despite seeing it... maybe 7 times I'll watch it again.
You know when you watch a film so many times that you can recite it from memory, this is one of them! I know I've spoken a lot about Transformers but I haven't actually talked about one of the films specifically, today seemed like a good day to do it, so enjoy :)
The 3rd instalment is based 3 years after the events of Revenge of Fallen and Sam has returned to his normal life with a new girl, a new house and is on the hunt for a job whilst the Autobots deal with world wide issues with nest... awaiting for the true enemies arrival. Optimus, after learning that his old mentor, Sentinel Prime, is on the moon he retrieves him and revives him with the all powerful Matrix of Leadership. As Sam is adjusting to the working life things take an unexpecting turn when the Decepticons are yet again after him for what he knows about the moon landing. The Decepticons plan becomes clear, they intend to use the the pillars to open a space bridge awakening an army of transformers and to bring Cybertron to earth. Only the Autobots can save the earth but all is not what it seems.
Like all Transformers film it got a lot of hate, this film actually received an award for "worst movie" which I think was undeserved and I'm not saying that just because I love the film but I genuinely believe that they are good films, however they do some issues and I think that's what held the trilogy back, mistakes that could have been easily avoided but... I still love watching them!
So I thought I would start on the negatives first, just to get them out the way. The first one that I'm honestly ok with but I know a lot of people really didn't like it and that is the human interaction within this film, I mean seriously what do you expect in a film based on earth? yes I do agree that they could have had less and I do agree that some of it is irrelevant to the film and that they focused to much on comic relief but honestly some of it was quite funny and surprisingly some of it did add to the entire story like Dylan (Patrick Dempsey).
I just felt that they could have less human and more transformers however saying that the film is divided to make it exciting and so they can get an equal amount of screen time, I've talked about it before and it always works like this robot, human, robot, human, combine and then a battle. so in this case it would be:
Robot- Cybertron
Human- Sam finding a job
Robot- Chernobyl
Human- Sam at work
Combine- Motorway chase
Battle- Chicago
you can apply this rule to the 2nd film as well but it works best for Dark of the Moon. I just felt that human interaction was used too much but nonetheless it was an amazing film. really that was the main feature that brought the film down or if I'm speaking on behalf of transformers fans who constantly moan then all the characters were rubbish and I personally think they are over thinking it. In the 1st film they complained that Megatron wasn't a gun... are you kidding me, you want this giant robot to transform and shrink into a gun, get out! right now! that's a ridiculous idea. So in this one there was a lot of "that doesn't look like this" and I would just like to say that the Transformers film are based on Hasbro toys that use to look like blocks, now they are realistic and modern; what would you prefer? The designers have completely reinvented the franchise and not only does that take balls but it takes skill and I guarantee none of you could do what they did and re-create iconic characters such as Optimus Prime.
Now onto the positives! I actually really enjoyed the actors, I am a big fan of Shia Labeouf and I think he portrayed the typical teenager really well and his character grew on me. The female actresses on the other hand aren't as good, yes they are attractive but they're not the best although saying that I do think they did a great job but it wasn't enough to please die-hard fans. They have to realise that this film is not just for THEM, Michael Bay intended to widen the audience and he did that by using 3 things, Cars, Babes and explosions- why else do you think all 3 are high grossing films? because they've expanded the audience to reach out to new people, before the first film in 2007 I wasn't that keen on the Transformers (true story)
Obviously the main thing that made this film great was the explosive action and stunning CGI, Michael Bay destroyed over 300 cars in 1 film, he may not specialise in character development or dialogue but he sure knows how to create an awesome battle. The character designs for this film are amazing, and the final outcome is honestly unbelievable the pure detail and accuracy they put into making a car transform is unreal and I'm guessing its not the quickest process as well...
What really amazes me about the effects as well is the movement of individual characters and the reflections, because their shiny you can actually see other characters and objects through mirrors and body parts whilst in robot form and I just really enjoyed that aspect! another thing as well are the explosions, Michael Bay is very dedicated when it comes to explosions that he will make them practically then he'll run at them with a camera and he'll make sure the explosions are big.
The fighting as well is just awesome, the motorway chase was fantastic because it introduced a new element which we called "stealth force" which is a cross between vehicle mode and robot form and that was fun to see because they could deal damage whilst looking good. The Chicago battle was magnificent especially when Optimus got involved, he took out more then 7 Decepticons in 40 seconds- Brilliant! And of course the epic fight between him and Sentinel, I really enjoyed that scene because it was swords and shields, Transformers always do that really well and its a great way to show off the characters moves and weapon ideas; Finally Optimus had his famous axe!
I give Dark of the Moon an 8, because I enjoy watching it as it has amazing CGI and jaw dropping actions however the Human characters really restricted the film but I still enjoyed their presence especially Sam's parents. I am really excited for the 4th instalment because I don't think it will have the comedic aspect as much and the cast is looking really good and so are the new designs for the Autobots (Grimlock!!!!!!!)
Anyway I hope you enjoyed, this was a lot of fun to type up and I realised it's a lot to read.... sorry :)
Thanks for reading
Until next time!!
