I, Frankenstein

Hello again! me and my brother sat down and watch I, Frankenstein and despite the critical response it got, it did not faze me and I really enjoyed it. I had no idea this was a graphic novel so I may even hunt for it, anyway here's my take on the film! enjoy.

I, Frankenstein is based on the creature that Frankenstein brought to life. If you don't know the original story the creature kills Victors wife for not making him a partner, Victor dies in the Arctic like conditions whilst pursuing the creature. The film starts with the creature burying his "father" he is then attacked by demons who want him alive under the orders of Prince Neberius, thankfully the Gargoyle order rescue him, supply him with weapons marked with the Gargoyles symbol which allows him to "descend" demons and even give him a name... Adam. For the next 200 years he wonders the earth fighting demons whilst Prince Neberius works on his plan that will obliterate the human race and the Gargoyle order, descending the earth into chaos.

Similar to Gravity, I was very surprised by the length of the film, its only 92 minutes long (1 hour 32 minutes) so it went really quickly and I was also surprised by the amount of action that was involved which made the film even more enjoyable.
The fighting is really cool in this especially when you have giant Gargoyles and Adam fighting against a giant horde of demons, this happened very early on in the film which was a great thing however I would have preferred it at the end, the final fight didn't seem that epic compared to the previous fight. You had Gargoyles flying around whilst hundreds of demons leapt from a rooftop plus you had Aaron Eckhart acting like a bad ass with his stick weapons, out of all the weapons there he goes for the stick. The style of the fighting did however remind me a lot of Underworld, which isn't a bad thing because the fighting is immense and great to watch and ultimately it was the main highlight of the film.

In terms of cast it is very good! I am a big fan of Aaron Eckhart, he was brilliant in the Dark knight as the infamous Two-face and great in Battle Los Angeles so it was really good to see him take a very unique role especially as it was a modern take on Frankenstein's creature. Bill Nighy is Prince Neberius the films villain, he offers a decent role however I wanted him to be spectacular! he was really great disguised as a human, he was cunning and great to listen to however when his true form is revealed its not amazing, I expected him to be huge and scary but he wasn't. The rest of the cast were average, honestly there weren't many, the Gargoyles were pretty cool but only a few had a main role in the film such as Leonore (The leader) and Gideon who leads the Gargoyles into battle and is without a doubt the coolest of them all.

The CGI of the film was very very good especially the sequences of the demons being "descended" when they were killed they would burst into flames and then what was very interesting was that the flame would descend into the ground; going to hell. What they did with that was very cool and it really made the film more eye appealing considering the dark mundane colours that surrounded the landscape so seeing a hundred burst of red and orange was pretty fun. However the one thing that bothered me about the effects used were the masks placed on the demons face, I just really didn't like them. Don't get me wrong the make up and prosthetics were great but they weren't demon like in my opinion; more like Goblins. As well as the mask I thought it would have been great for a full figure demon not just a mask and hands, yes it would have required more work but I think the overall results would have looked really good instead of demons running around in hoodies and jeans.

Other than that the film was very enjoyable, I think a 6.5/10 is fair. What brought the film down for me was the demon's looks, the lack of a big boss and a plot hole. I rarely speak of plot holes but I think this one needs to be discussed quickly.
Ok... demons can take over a creatures body as long as it doesn't have a soul, Neberius attempts to put a demon into the creature right at the end but it doesn't work, my guess is because out of his actions he has in fact gained a soul... it seems plausible but the film doesn't explain it unless I missed it so that had me confused for a while.
Anyway! the fighting was epic! the cast were good and the story was actually really decent. So no its not an award winning film but its definitely one that I can watch with my family and just enjoy. Please don't be put off by the reviews, its a good film and it would be great to see a more spectacular sequel, with maybe a bigger threat and a massive war... that would be cool.

Thanks for reading! hope you enjoyed :)
I bid you farewell
Until next time.
