Space.... The final frontier
honestly, I have never been a big trekky. I know, I know, that's pretty surprising coming from me but i have watched a lot of the series and obviously JJ Abrams films. Today I thought I would talk about the sequel because I really enjoyed that one and by then I knew a bit more about the Star Trek world including one particular character portrayed by the great Benedict Cumberbatch in the sequel, I will try and keep his identity hidden but its been a year since its release so I think it will be ok.
When a former Star fleet member launches a numerous amount of terrorist attacks against Star Fleet, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to find Harrison but all is not what it seems when it is revealed that John Harrison is more than just a human. Kirk must fight to protect his crew and prevent a plan from inside Star fleet that will start a giant war that will inevitably end with the death of millions. The Crew will sacrifice everything to stop this from happening, to stop Harrison and to prevent war.
What's good about this film is that you don't really need to see the 1st one so if you haven't then its no biggie, however it is always good to watch the first one because if you aren't familiar with the Star Trek concept then the 2009 film really does make a lot of sense especially the way they introduce the characters.
Anyway!
The cast is awesome! I think they were selected brilliantly especially Zachary Quinto who plays Spock and in this his role is amazing and what is interesting are the "Easter eggs" used, there are a lot of connections with the original series and films which are always fun to see except these are very noticeable (Leonard Nimoy) but more on that later!
Spock's role is very good because we do see a different side to him, usually he is very content but something happens that triggers his anger, usually Vulcan's are very in control of their emotions but being half human makes him vulnerable and it was brilliant to see such an angry version of Spock because it did lead to a great finale, honestly I think Spock was the star of this film along side Benedict.
Benedict plays the mysterious John Harrison who is a super human, we see his skills on Kronos and he takes out an entire Klingon fleet so he is definitely not your average person but what Benedict brings to the role is sympathy which is strange for a villain because we do associate villains with brutality and having a lack of morality but with this character we sympathise with him because he realises that what he is doing is 100% wrong but sometimes villains do have families and like the classical cliché... he is being forced to do it to protect his family essentially.
The rest of the cast are great, I just think Benedict and Zachary stood out the most and for me they made the film fantastic. If you are a "Cumberbitch" then definitely watch it or if your a "Pinenut" then you'll go... nuts (get it!, get it!, Laugh with me!)
The action side to the film is actually really good, there's quite a lot of fighting which is displayed brilliantly, the best scene is probably the Klingon fight where Harrison takes them out with absolute ease. Or when we see the enterprise fight against the ultimate ship, faster and stronger! Although its not a massive fight the effects for it are stunning and very detailed. One thing that JJ Abrams loves doing is throwing in as many lens flares as possible but in this sequel they seemed to have been over used in irrelevant places such as space although I sometimes thought they looked pretty cool but don't over use them (please Abrams, be careful when doing star wars!)
So the action was great to watch because the effects were fantastic but even when there isn't action everything is really enjoyable because your in space and it just looks amazing plus the character dialogue is really good especially from Simon Pegg who offers a comedic role and Benedict who just sounds sinister and awesome... thats the only way to explain him in this film.
Another thing I liked was the beginning, it was fun and a great introduction to the film and it really set the foundation for character confrontations which developed throughout such as Uhura and Spocks love which is ultimately tested as well as Kirk and Spock's friendship and it really flourishes at the end.
Whilst writing this I have decided to talk a bit about the ending so please leave if you haven't seen it
The ending is great because it opens up and reveals certain characters trait and its really Spock's time to shine but its even better because there is that connection with the original film "Wrath of Kahn" in which we see Spock die however in this, Kirk sacrifices himself and this is when we see Spock loose control and it is a fantastic scene because its both tragic and awesome as we get to see Kahn and Spock fight it out and although the fighting should have been the main focus I was actually intrigued by the futuristic scenery... I'm weird like that!
Overall I loved it! I give it an awesome 7.5/10
The action is great
The effects are awesome
The cast are great! and the story is very good with its ups and downs. What I felt was wrong was that Kahn didn't seem himself compared to Wrath of Khan. I also felt that Alice eve's role was primarily meant for eye candy and with all due respects, that's not what star trek is.
But other than that I loved it! for me Benedict and Spock were the highlight!
Thanks for reading!
Until next time my friends :)
