Captain America

Hello people! you're looking well, have you been ill? as my Grandad would say. I hope you guys have had an awesome weekend especially in this weather (UK) and the amount of things that have been going on... the football started right? well I will be avoiding that.
So with the release of Captain America 2 I thought it would be a cool idea to just reflect on the first film staring the First Avenger. I hope you guys enjoy :)

The First Avengers really sets the foundation for Avengers, throughout some of the films like Iron Man and Hulk there were hints teasing the famous team but when this film came out it was certain that an Avenger film would indeed happen because all of them had had their own film so it was only a matter of time as well as that there were small indications towards a bigger idea which I will discuss later. But what I was worried about was that I find Captain America the least most interesting character, compared to a guy in awesome armor, a god with a mean swing and a raging green monster the Captain kinda looks a bit lame so for me they really needed show off the captain and in certain parts I think they did but then again I thought they made him look like a joke but actually really helped his character and it gave it that World war 2 feel to it.

In Captain America we get Steve Rogers story on how he became this icon during the war and exactly how he became this patriotic legend that helped win the war against the Nazis and Hydra. The story is fantastic, we get a really nice contrasting character and the development from Steve to Captain America is really cool and entertaining. We witness this bullied, small and weak boy who is determined to fight for his country become the ultimate weapon and the transformation does create a very interesting and solid plot. Things slowly start to unravel as the red skull plans to unleash his new weapon; the Tesseract. The Captain must fight against Hydra to free his friends and to stop this weapon from killing millions.
The only problem I had with the film is that I think it spent too much time making Captain America look silly, the whole sequence with the star spangled man was clever and entertaining however I found that it went on for too long where as it could have been replaced with a bit more of the Captain doing what he does best but it was really fun to see the celebrity side of Steve Rogers as he became famous but I just felt that compared to the winter solider the first avenger failed to show off the skill and power of Captain America.

This was a great introduction to Captain America, it had a lot of fun action scenes, humour because Marvel do it so well and a fantastic cast. Chris Evans despite playing Johnny Storm was fantastic as Captain America, he has the right physique and patriotic attitude and it will be great to see him continue and progress for a few more films, how many more is a completely different story. It was great to see Tommy Lee Jones in a marvel film honestly I never thought it would happen but it did and his role in the film was fantastic, whilst asserting this role of authority he actually managed to bring a lot of fun to the film which is key in a marvel film, not only does the action have to be good but we need those little gags and Mr Jones nailed it especially when he got involved in the action instead of being on the side line.
Out of the entire cast I honestly believe the villains stood out the most, Hugo Weaving was terrific, he looked awesome and I think he successfully brought the Red Skull to life but following the events in Captain America I really do hope he returns and I certainly hope they don't just forget him.

What I also liked was the costume, making a superhero film is difficult because you need to find a way to bring an iconic costume to life whilst still making it recognisable and they completely changed Captains look but it worked so well because it had this WW2 feel to it with the multiple belts and although they changed it completely they still kept this patriotic aspect which is obviously very important, with Captain America having 3 different costumes it's really difficult to decide which one is the best.

Overall I give Captain America a 7/10, it is a very good introduction to the famous Avenger that had an interesting plot and some awesome characters however I felt it lacked pivotal scenes which would have showed off Captain America's skills but what we did get was decent I just didn't think we got enough. I really liked the way they made small references to Norse Mythology that was very interesting and I loved the role it played in Avengers, it seems that the Captain America films create the ultimate tease for the Avengers (watch the post credit scene for CA2)
I really enjoyed it, its not the best marvel film out there but it sure isn't the worst.

Thanks for reading!
Until next time :)
