I am going to put this as simply as I can... Inception is about dreams. Dom Cobb is a specialist who enters dreams to extract important information, following the death of his wife who made Dom look like the prime suspect he fled the United states. With his Partner Arthur (Joseph Gordon Levitt) they go round performing illegal missions to access targets subconscious to gain information for their employers. Mr Saito (Ken Watanabe) approaches them asking them to perform Inception... which is planting an idea into someone's mind, he intends them to do it so that his energy empire competitor fails. In doing so, Cobb will be allowed to see his children at last.
Dom assembles a team to execute Inception. The characters first letter of their name spell out DREAMS which is just awesome
Dom (Cobb)
Robert (Fischer)
Eames
Arthur
Mal
Saito
Anyway! the film is quite complex because it always leaves this impending question whether they are in a dream or not and they do that very well which I think is why I enjoyed it a lot, because it was always interesting and it always leaves you wondering, and then they decided to further confuse you by entering a dream within a dream within another dream which formulates 3 levels of awesomeness. The film itself is just so well designed and produced that I have simply watched it just to understand what is going on in the final aspect of the film. The thought that went into this film is unbelievable and the conventions behind it are so interesting and just awesome, I would consider it as one of the most brilliant and clever films ever mainly because its just so damn cool and intriguing to watch however it is definitely a film you have to pay attention to and that hurts my brain. There were some really cool concepts in there like this idea of a totem which can determine whether or not your in a dream which is why a lot of people associate Inception with a spinning top which is Mal's totem not Dom's, it has been speculated that his wedding ring acts as his totem... which is really cool and I think a lot of people missed it, when I heard about this rumour I had to go back and watch it.
There were loads of other really cool things involved in the film and I'll list a few of them for you.
1) Level designs- during the actual mission there are a few levels and each one is unique in its own way, you have a hotel, a snowy fortress thing and a normal city and all of them are cool plus you do get a sneak peak into the design of the levels which Dom must avoid because of Mal. Not only does it create a lot of fun but you'll know that Mal will find her way into the dream, one way or another she's here to screw things up.
2) Hotel Level- This is Arthur's dream and its probably the best scene because it involves zero gravity and fighting on walls, that is just awesome! I just found it very clever how the environment in the previous dream or reality effects the current dream and they really focus on that a lot. In the beginning you have Dom being pushed into a bathtub which results in his dream being hit by immense waters, another rather funny example is that Yusef who is the designer of level 1 forgets to go to the toilet... so it rains. It's little details like that which added a bit of humour to the film but also made it more real and it added that "Action" aspect to it.
3) Limbo- The idea of limbo is really cool in this, its basically when you travel deeper into a dream and you awake in Limbo where you can control anything and build anything. Getting out of Limbo is unfortunately not as easy.
The entire cast is just amazing! you know its a Christopher Nolan film when it involves most of the cast from Batman and that is definitely not a bad thing. The cast work well together and their performances are some of the best I've ever seen especially from DiCaprio who I thought was amazing in it and Joseph Gordon Levitt, I thought his role was exceedingly good but everyone involved was just brilliant. Out of everyone DiCaprio stood out the most because I thought he was absolutely brilliant in this.
How could I forget the music! the music is done by Hans Zimmer and it is probably his best work in all honesty. What he does is amazing he created such a nice yet dramatic soundtrack that incorporated the famous song "Non, Je ne regrette" by Edith Piaf and he uses it in such a clever way that it actually suits the plot. In a dream time slows down and Hans Zimmer slows down this song which resulted in that loud piece of music that is used very often; its absolute genius!
My favourite track from the score is definitely "Time" which is played at the end of the film when the mission is complete and all the characters go their separate ways and its just a beautiful piece of music. It goes from this lovely slow pace to this triumphant beat, only Hans Zimmer could make walking through an airport awesome.
Overall I give the film an easy 9/10 because it is such a cleverly design film that is brilliant, fun and enjoyable to watch because of its interesting vibe. The cast is solid and just down right amazing plus the music is epic thanks to Hans Zimmer and the little action sequences are surprisingly great from the hotel scene and the snowy background which involves snowmobiles and a massive explosion. Christopher Nolan did an amazing job in developing this unique story and its definitely one to watch.
The Ending
I wanted to talk about the ending because I believe that this is probably the greatest way to end a film, its both annoying yet rather nice and happy in many ways. I want to do it from the perspective before Nolan revealed the full ending at the Oscars, all I wanted to say at the time is that I sure hoped it wasn't a dream but the way Nolan ended it was fantastic, it was annoying at the time because obviously we couldn't tell if he was dreaming or whether he is finally getting what he wanted; to see his kids. Although at the time we were unclear of whether he was dreaming it was a very beautiful ending either way but haven't learnt of the true ending I couldn't be happier however I really didn't want to know. What was and still is great about Inception is that it is open to different interpretations and theories, the week after it came out there was so much stuff on the internet involving peoples theories and it was so interesting to see how people saw the film.
Thank you for reading
If you have seen Inception then your awesome... if not then you need to! watch it again and keep your eyes open!
